Catterick Bridge

A thoroughbred racing venue situated in Richmond, North Yorkshire, Catterick Bridge hosts regular flat, jump and national hunt races throughout the year. History

Catterick Bridge racecourse opened to the public in 1783 with the first recorded race taking place on April 22nd that year, but it wasn’t until 1813 that a permanent course was built on the site.

Over the next century, racing at Catterick Bridge increased in popularity and in 1906 the first stand was built at the racecourse to accommodate the growing number of racing enthusiasts brought to Catterick by newly developed railway links. In 1923 the Catterick’s Racecourse Company was formed to help the course grow and develop, its work evidenced in 2004 when the company raised £600,000 to redevelop the stable yard. Today much of Catterick’s original framework is still in place but the course also hosts a range of modern facilities, including five hospitality suites, a champagne bar and a children’s play area. Catterick Bridge has hosted a number of significant races over the course of its racing history, most recently in 2002 when it was the site of the first ever win by international flat racing champion Collier Hill.

Races/ events

Catterick Bridge is one of the few racecourses in the country to hold a meeting every month of the year (weather permitting) and is the busiest racecourse in North Yorkshire. Catterick hosts 27 jump, flat and hunt races a year with three tracks to accommodate each type of race. The flat race track is a left handed, sharp, undulating oval which covers a distance of 1 mile 180 yards, ending with a 3 furlong run-in. Similarly, the hunt course is also a left handed, sharp, undulating oval but is slightly shorter covering a distance of 1 mile 1 furlong and finishing with a 240 yard run-in. The jump track is not quite as sharp as the flat or hunt tracks but the fences are placed relatively close together and like the other tracks it is best suited to handy horses.

New Years Day Meeting: The racing year at Catterick begins with the popular New Years Day Meeting which features two handicap races and a two mile chase for novices.

North Yorkshire Grand National: With prize money of £10,000 the North Yorkshire Grand National is a high value handicap chase covering a distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs.

Catterick Sunday Market: Held at the racecourse every Sunday, the Catterick Sunday Market is the biggest market in North Yorkshire. Open from 9 am – 4 pm the market has 250 traders selling a range of food and other products.
